New York Boxing: Golovkin vs Lemieux
After the Floyd/Manny debacle, the boxing world is looking for a new star and perhaps a star that can bring back a “fan friendly style” of knockouts and “in the ring” drama.
Two such contests on the horizon are the much anticipated clash between the Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez (scheduled for November 21st)and Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux, who fight this Saturday October 17th at Madison Square Garden
Gennedy Golovkin (33-0) is an amateur phenom who became a knockout artist when turning pro (30 KOs) and David Lemieux (34-2 )another big puncher has 31 knock outs. Both have a lot to prove as they are using this match to determine whether they are the new hope for the sport of just media hype. But both fighters have been criticized because of their suspect opposition. This contest is designed to prove whether both are stars or is one the star and the other a fraud.
Gennedy Golovkin , also called “Triple G,” has take on all opponents who dared to set foot in the ring with him and each brave contestant has suffered the same fate : a systemic beat down followed by near decapitation. Case in point: Curtis Steven from the NY based “Chin Checker crew” dared to face GGG and at his first knockdown his face said it all. His eyes were bulging like he just awoke from a bad dream, as if he realized that he was juggling a live grenade or saw GGG’s head rotate a full 360 degrees. Either way Curtis never recovered from being hit by the crosstown bus that was GGG and was finally rescued from further damage by the referee at the end of round 8. Curtis’s march towards middleweight stardom had been temporarily derailed.
Lemieux on the other hand has an outstanding record with 31 knockouts. His most celebrated is his win over Hassna N’Dam and the game Gabriel Rosado who was reduced to a bloody mess. Lemieux’s punching power was evident as he busted up Rosado. Rosado was retired in round 10 when there was very little of him left to punch. If Rosado’s crimson mask is any indication of Lemieux’s punching power then he will be a great test for Golovkin.
Lemieux’s only losses are in 2011 to Joachim Alcine and Marco Antonio Rubio.
As we know in boxing anything can happen, but Newyorkfighting.com predicts that GGG will be victorious for the following reasons:
GGG has never lost. He does not know how to lose and this can be a huge advantage.
GGG has an impressive amateur background scoring impressive wins over future stars Andre Dirrell and Lucien Bute (actually chin checked Bute – now that’s huge!)
Although GGG has become a knockout artist, as an amateur he demonstrated great boxing skills. A boxer-puncher always has a plan B. Out-box him or knock him out. (Sugar Ray Leonard knocked out Tommy Hearns but had to out-box Duran on their second meeting.)
So this Saturday night live from Madison Square Garden on HBO PPV, for the fans (according to GGG) who like Mexican Style boxing or the “Big Drama” show, it’s an early Halloween gift!
