Ring of Combat 55: Gregor Gillespie
Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie is a man on a mission, and that mission is to join the roster of the UFC. Clearly not the type of man to rest on his laurels, those laurels are nonetheless impressive. Aside from amassing an undefeated MMA record of 6-0 with all wins by stoppage in the first round, Ring of Combat promoter Lou Neglia has called him arguably the best wrestler in MMA. The Webster, NY native is an NCAA Division I national wrestling champion and four-time All-American wrestler out of Edinboro University, where he still holds the record for most career victories. His accomplishments in the sport of wrestling are too many to list.
The mission of Gregor Gillespie continues on June 3rd in Atlantic City where he takes on Sidney Outlaw (5-2) in the main event at Ring of Combat 55. Outlaw, a skilled grappler in his own right, is a veteran of the local grappling and MMA scene and may be Gillespie’s toughest test to date. Prior to his last title defense, in his “Behind The Fighter” interview with New York Fighting, Gillespie said that he hoped a win would come with a call from the UFC. That, of course, has not materialized, so one would have to imagine that a victory over the likes of Sidney Outlaw would make the call-up even more likely.
Gillespie is known for never being “in fight camp” and instead his life consists training hard all the time. He previously told New York Fighting “I don’t underestimate anyone I fight, and I don’t overlook anyone I fight,” but he always appears confident and believes he is more than ready to compete in the UFC. He believes persistence is his best attribute, and this weekend he will put that persistence on display as he looks to continue his undefeated march to the big leagues.
