Sidney Outlaw: Born and Bred Fighter
Welterweight fighter Sidney Outlaw is ready to get back into the ring and rumble this upcoming Friday at the Tropicana Showroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Ring of Combat championship belt lays on the line for Outlaw, but the 24-year old is confident it’s his for the taking.
Sidney says easily, “I’m feeling great! I can’t wait to get out there and show what I can do. It’s been a journey, but I’ve been fighting in every aspect of my life for as long as I can remember. I have a lot of confidence because I’ve been able to fight under some really hard circumstances, and get myself through things that would break other people. Everything is put together and I’m ready to show what I can do.”
Outlaw carries a record of 6-3 as a professional and is looking to improve it with this upcoming fight. He feels as though the people he has around him now are helping him become the champion he wants to be, instead of just surviving through his fights.
“Randy Brown and Frankie Edgar are two guys who are around me a lot, and I look up to them a lot. I love the Renzo Gracie team, they watch me and what I do, and just help me improve on all of it. I’m relaxing and having fun, but still putting in work. Isn’t that how training is supposed to be? The things people don’t want to do, are the things you have to fall in love with. I have to be like a sponge and just absorb as much as I can so I can be the best.”
It’s not just Sidney’s teammates that are helping him prepare–he has a lot of gratitude towards his management team as well.
“I love being a part of Battlescar Management. My manager Matt does a lot for me, and treats me like family. He calls and checks up on me even in between fights, just to make sure I’m okay and doing what I’m supposed to. I feel like they really have my best interests at heart. Especially in New York, you’re lucky when you’re taken care of. I guess I am pretty lucky.”
With a solid support system and consistent schedule, Outlaw doesn’t need much more to prepare himself. He idolizes great fighters such as Mike Tyson and Georges St-Pierre, and promises that he will “be somebody and be somewhere.”
“I want to be one of the best in the world. I am grateful because I am doing something I love and I have the possibility to inspire others. My family sacrificed for me to get here and I want to return the favor for them. I dealt with some really hard stuff, like it felt like the world was caving in on me and I was the loneliest I’d ever been. But guys like Randy, who are so talented and work so hard, show me what life is really about. Only a small percentage of the world fights so many won’t understand where I’m coming from. But going into the cage, I know who I am. I embrace the pain. I am a born and bred fighter.”
